the best gearbox for a conversion is the pre ´72 version with the shift mechanism at the nose cone (mainly 914 1.7). For this gearbox you do not need to buy different inside shift rods. The later 914 needs the 3 shiftrods inside plus the side cover where now the shift mechanism is placed. These parts easliy cost 200 Euro as used parts. So, if you´ve got the choice....
There is no or no real difference in ratios on the 2 types of 914. The only one that differs completely is the 914/6. This has shorter ratios which are similiar to the ones of the 901-gearbox. But on the other hand it is so, that those who own such a gearbox won´t give it away or would ask for much more money than for a 914/4-one. So, don´t worry about this!
