The codes on a 915 gearbox will tell you what gearing should be in it and what year it was produced. Only the first 5 digits are important, the rest is just a serial number for the gearbox.
As to what a 915 gearbox will set you back, that is kind of tricky, it really depends. You can find them fairly inexpensive, but there are some issues that you should be aware of. The intermediate bearings will very often be bad and spinning in the case. This will require fixing. If you are going to be purchasing a used gearbox I would recommend that you send it out for rebuild. These are not especially difficult, but do require maintaining so that they will shift smoothly.
A typical rebuild will run you in the neighborhood of $2,500 to $3,000 depending on the gearboxes condition and the quality of the rebuild. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. I am here to help.
