I Fit them to provide an angular jet to the top side of the piston crown were the most heat is, the angled oil stream also covers the complete piston from skirt to skirt because the closing distance alters, approach a wall with the cars headlamps on at different approach angles and all becomes clear. Notching the con rod eye is another simple way to do it and it can't fail, block or go wrong, I use this way now mostly on track motors, but these are not needed on general engines anyway, just all out dry sump endurance turbo race motors, as there is so much oil mist in the cases, nothing more is needed, Porsche developed and used them for LeMans 24 hr engines and they've become rather a fashion accessory.
