We had a series called the beetle Cup in the UK you had to run a supplied kit and could not change too much. This is how my car ended up.

Lowered front end, Standard front disks with competition pads, 2 sets of caster shims fitted, Bump steer kit, aftermarket castor adjustors, Bent top arms for more camber, long travel ball joints, and a heavy duty roll bar.

Rear end was up rated torsion bars with the poly bushes and lowered. Standard rear drums fitted with front drum wheel cylinders. No rear roll bar etc as they don’t work so just ran some restriction on the droop.

Spax dampers all round, Braded brake lines with comp fluid. The fuel tank had a bigger outlet fitted and fed the carb via an electric pump and bigger fuel lines through the car to an adjustable filter and fuel pressure regulator.

Windows were replaced with Plexi glass and every unrequired nut, bolt, washer, wiring along with all the under seal etc was removed, and ran it on buffed tires, with a solid mounted gearbox.

The engines came as a sealed unit, 1641cc, standard rods, crank and heads, full flowed with a heavy duty oil pump, Engle 120 cam, and lightened fly wheel. All the engines came with a Single twin 40 Dellorto carb kit and an exhaust system.

I fitted 1.25.1 rockers, and Auto craft shafts along with up rated valve springs and heavy duty push rods, and got some more taken off the flywheel and fitted a small pulley.
The carb inlets were polished and the plenum for the carb modified with balance pipes fitted to the manifolds, and the air filter replaced.

We had to run standard brakes, no dropped spindles, all steel panels, no extra aero devices, standard steering and pedals, no adjustable spring plates, no electronic ignition, gear boxes boxes could be selected from across the beetle range but no swapping of ratios you picked the box that you thought was best.

Wheels were restricted to any standard rims or you could use Cyclone Dragstars, we also had a min weight and ride height.

Think that’s about it, made for excellent racing with grids of 20 cars plus all with the same spec.

Pity it was allowed to die out.
