Motor Question

I was handed down a 1972 VW bug so it is still stock. I need advice on a good motor to start with. Not knowing to much about bugs after reading I have figured out that I have a Stock 1600cc? What would be a good motor to put in it so I can get a little speed and make this a sleeper? I found a place that will seel me a 1600CC with dual Webers ect ect turn key motor. Is it worth my time to even try that or should I go wwith a bigger one now? Eventually I want speed out of it. I have friends that say bugs can't be fast but I saw one a the drag strip run an 8 in the quarter so I know it can be done. Help!
