camber plate question 1302/3
Was pondering something..
Like most, I am doing the 944 front brake upgrade, with 944 spindles, Topline Maxx struts, and Topline camber bolts.. From reading here and on superbeetles, it seems that the camber settings are still off with the above setup.. Some have suggested using some bolts from H&R. While others have recommeded elongated the upper slot on the Topline Maxx struts and open the bolt hole on the spindle.. Lastly the use of a camber/caster plate.. Out of all three, I would think that the use of a plate would be best.. At the time, and present time included I did not go for Kersher Setup that seems to have the slots.. I haven't had time to disassemble the spindle and strut to see how much space there is to elongate.. any thoughts on safety? As far as camber plates, it seems our options are thin, unless you go overseas.. Question then is, can you modify a Rabbit camber plate to fit.. such as redrill bolt up holes.. Topline uses the Rabbit inserts, but I have reservation about this due to compatability issues.. Below is some thing I saw online.. first thing that pops into my head is the upper spring perch.. Any thoughts.. are any of the vendors will to tackle this issue.. GROUP BUY.. modify holes and mill a upper sping perch to mate.. THOUGHTS.. I need two sets.. for two bugs Alex

Camber plates for 1302/1303's have been on the back burner as one of the R&D projects for quite a while for me. I've picked out the right spherical bearings, but still have fabricate the mount. Maybe one of these days.....

Alex, if you can get a set of the inner part( the bearing or ball joint)of the Rabbit aftermarket camber plate( If those are the struts you are using) you should be able to fabricate the plates. I did mine with simple hand tools such as Sears bench drill and a couple of hand files. I took me most of the part of 2 days but worth the work.I think I used 1/4 or 5/16 steel plates.

Flat, What are you waiting for
just kidding.. let us know if priority changes.. Onix.. In the mean time do you have any pics.. not sure how to go about.. but very curious.. It seems there is a market, since so many are going to face this issue, I don't recall to many guys going the Ker$her route.. Thanks Alex

The use of Topline's Camber Plus kit, H&R's CCC bolt (marketed for the Rabbit/Golf), and the upper bolt hole (on the strut housing, not on the spindle) will solve this problem. Look at the Super's upper bolt hole on the strut housing and compare it to a Rabbit/Golf(to '92)/924/944/968 and make the hole sloted like the other car(s). |
