Bumpsteer....

I roughly know what it is, but how do I tell if I got it?

On my '03, I run a 944 front end, meaning I got the brakes and struts off a 944. The tie-rods are VW items and they are mounted bottom-up on the Porsche spindle instead of the usual top-down VW way.

Will that give me bump steer? I've got less then 1/2" between the fender and tire, so you get an idea of how low the car is.

What happens is that I find the steering wheel moving to the road sometimes. Is that bumpsteer or just a steering damper gone bad?

How do I check if my damper is good still?

Is the only solution to put a bumpsteer kit on those BEAUTIFUL spindles? Seems like a waste as people put bumpsteer kits to correct lowered Bugs and I have to reverse it to get rid of it... Sigh....

Thanks for any help.

Sprint.

The tie rod outer ends should be just below the inner ends at rest. When the suspension is compresed the outer ends should be just above the inner ends. This means that the when the suspension is compressed, the change effective horizontal length of the tie rod is minimized.

Thanks for the explaination. On my 944-strut'ed car, at rest the outer end is a bit below. I have yet to see it when the suspension is compressed. Tomorrow, I'll hunt for a fat friend! Or a fat chick!
