Removing spring plate rubber grommets

I tried to remove the rubber grommets from the 944 spring plates but the rubber grommets are bonded firmly to the spring plates that seems no way to remove them. Anyone has the experience to get rid of those old rubbers without damaging the metal?

Thanks
Tim

I tried numerous ways including burning them off! In the end the best way by far was by using a hack saw to get most of it off and then cleaning up with an angle grinder and wire wheel attachment. Nice and easy!

Thanks Rich. I will try.

Tim

p.s. I lived in Leamington Spa when I was studying at the U. of Warrick in the late '80. I bought a '72 1200 bug at that time for GBP200.
