That looks like the 1776.
Terrible news. I see a fingerprint on the flat lobe. What lifters? Cam? Oil? Will she be running for Sunday's track day?

I'm stumped really. This is the 1776 that was in the bus this year. It came out of Carbo's oval when he exploded his cooling fan last summer ( technically, I exploded his cooling fan..hehe). I took it apart this spring, put new pistons/cylinders (90.5A's, AA)and new heads (044, 40x35 p&p). The longblock had about 15-20K on it before the top-end rebuild. She was fine most of the summer, but has been getting rough the last little while, right Aaron?
The only thing I can think of is that the original heads had single springs, and the new heads on the motor had dual springs. I dunno. The cam was a C-35. Scat lifters. Castrol 10-30 oil. Another weird thing was that the 1-3 lobes were perfect, I indicated them and they are exact to the cam card. The 2-4 lobes had .080" and .100" lift. I put a 120 into it with new lifters, and followed the breaking procedure religiously (2000rpm, 25mins). I left out the inner spring on the heads this time. Also downgraded the 30mm pump for a 26mm. I did a real full-flow on it too while it was apart (previously had a CB in-out pump, ehhw). All new bearings also. Had a fun time with the endplay, with the 3 thinnest shims that exist, I couldn't get enough play. Apparently the red/white mahle bearings sets have fatter thrusts then stock. It was either I leave out a shim or machine the flywheel. Damn, that lathe comes in handy! Next time I'll check endplay before closing the case, since it would have been easier to face-off the bearing. She's back together and running like a champ. I hope she lasts this time... I may make the track day, but I'm down in Chicago for the rest of this week setting up for a trade show for next week. I'm not sure if I'll be back for the weekend. Bry, this isn't the 'ticker'. Her time will come this fall when things settle down. I'm looking forward to that discovery.... Lifter pic below. Last edited by flat; September 2nd 2008 at 19:38. |

Engle cam, who's lifters?
I wouldn't mind doing a hardness test on the cam and lifters at some point, if that interests you. Alex

my bugpack lifters and webcam combination looked like that
poopie so that messed up combo is scat c35 & scat lifter? I was going to use that combo on a stocker i have apart now, it was that or engle 110 Hey Lanner, I'm sure everyone has their own trick to keeping their vdubs alive, one that has been working for me is lots of zinc. Bardhal B2 added to my castrol 20w50, cams/lifters seem to like it bry
