Question My design of a deep sump

PLease let me know what u think of this design for a deep sump. I'm after more oil capacity in the never ending quest to keep it cool on the track. I should get another 3 litres of oil with this. I currently run an anti surge which is brilliant but only hold about half a cup of oil extra. I've added baffles to the design & there will also be an alooy gasket in between the sump & the case which will allow oil to pour in but not slosh out with cornering, similar to a watering can spout. It will also be Ceramic coated with a heat disapation coating to aid in cooling.
All comments advice welcome.
regards

Re: My design of a deep sump

Hello-

PLease let me know what u think of this design for a deep sump. I'm after more oil capacity in the never ending quest to keep it cool on the track.

How long are you on the track at a time? If this is a short event, like a solo or autocross or something, then it may help a little. If this is a long event, then it won't help temperatures much if anything at all. You'll still get hot at the end.

That isn't to say that a deep sump is a bad idea - it's good for other reasons, such as being able to have oil when you corner really hard. That's kinda important on a track :-).

I should get another 3 litres of oil with this. I currently run an anti surge which is brilliant but only hold about half a cup of oil extra. I've added baffles to the design

One idea: you could make the baffles into a little "cup" with holes in the bottom of it. This is exactly the way a FI fuel tank looks - there's a cup in the middle of it with a hole or two (you'd need more than just one or two baby-sized holes as oil flow is much higher than fuel flow). I dunno how hard this'll be to fabricate, though, as I don't yet see what your method is for making the bloody thing :-).

& there will also be an alooy gasket in between the sump & the case which will allow oil to pour in but not slosh out with cornering, similar to a watering can spout. It will also be Ceramic coated with a heat disapation coating to aid in cooling.

A heat dispersant coating would be nice, but at least the stuff I've dealt with is very delicate. I wouldn't put it on the inside of the sump, and on the outside, you may scrape a bunch off during use. If this isn't expensive, it'll be convenient, but if it is, I wouldn't deal with it.

To add a little cooling, I'd machine an aluminum bottom plate from billet with fins in it. Then, I'd weld this piece of aluminum to other pieces of bent aluminum sheet metal for the rest of it. Of course, this makes it harder to fabricate.... <sigh>

Take care,

Hi Jak,
I like it! I also think it will help a lot in keeping oil pressure stable in hard/long turns and that is will do little for temperature, but the first advantage is more of a problem that can only be solved in this way. For oil temperature control there are several other possibilities...
Its also a good plan, since the only other type 4 sump I've ever seen is a Scat one and that one rquired a lot of machining, or so I heard. Don't know if it still is produced even...
I hope sealing it will not be a problem since we can't really tighten the oil plate bolt more than prescribed.. (9 lbs/ft or s/th?)
Keep us informed please!
Greetings,
Walter

Jak, I am not sure adding more oil is the answer, as Shad says, its all going to heat up eventually. A deep sump will help with oil pickup on the corners, but really you need to add more cooling, not more oil. You just need larger coolers...

Shad is totally right...What I have learned is that a huge sump can actually MAKE FOR HOTTER OIL after the engine is held at one RPM for a while....Seems that with all that hot oil, it helps preheat the rest of the oil....I had a 3-1/2 quart sump on an engine a few years ago, and had temps of 235 most of the time....The sump kept scraping the ground so I removed it and replaced it with a 1.5 quart sump.

Temps dropped 40 degrees! No other changes made!
