Fire wall options (stainless, aluminum, CF)
so im trying to figure out what i want for a fire wall, at first i was just going to do a line-x coating... but looking further into that i can tell you it wont be to cheap.
I have lots of rust in the sides of the engine compartment near the bumper suports (the suports are solid, just not all the sheet metal) so im doing lots of rust repair around there so painting it would be an option if i can get everything smooth... kinda a weird place to work so i dont know how good i would be at doing that. So a firewall would be great for hiding some of the repairs and cleaning up the engine bay... This IS NOT a show car, but i like a clean engine bay. so i begain to think about a stainless steel firewall (smooth, lovers are dumb looing in my opinion) or aluminum and maybe carbon fiber(CF=$$$ though) panels. this way i could also have some sound dampening behind the panels (dynamat extreme) to help make some of the engine noise comfortable (but i want some engine noise, just not ear muffler loud). How heavy would a stainless steel firewall be about? Is there any good ones out there. i have seen some at CIP-1 and in other ads in the VW mags. Any aluminum ones , i have not seen any in the mags or online YET. Thanks Jonathan |

20 guage stainless, It dosn't weigh a whole lot. I ended up mounting a bunch of stuff to it, looks to cluttered for me so It'll all be pulled soon for my engine revamp, it'll get a fresh one piece stainless firewall and sides all the accessories that were mounted on it will be tucked above the tranny for a clean look.

I cut my firewall out and moved it in 10" to make room for my future turbo placement.
If you just have rust and no gapping holes you could always just por-15 the metal.
