Which axles to use with al 944 arms?
I need to know which axles I need to use with my early 944 Turbo aluminum trailing arms. I am concerned about the length of the axle.
Do I need to get 944 Turbo ones or can I just take 944 ones? Is there a length difference? Thanks a lot, Alex |

I don't know if the early aluminum trailing arms and the late aluminum trailing arms have the same axle lenght but I think they do. I am using a set of 1987 944-S axles with my stock type 1 tranny and 1987 944-S late aluminum trailing arms. The axles are 21-1/4'' long. They do not bind or bottom out at any point of the suspension travel. They use the VW spline so type 1 and type 2 cv's will slide right on. They are a little thicker in the middle but you can still get the type 1 cv boot over the axle. Hope this helps.

boygenius,
what is that rear wheel, and what offset? Alex, The early 944's used 16" axles, same as type 1. |

No wheel spacers needed. Plenty of clearance with the tires on with late aluminum trailing arms. Hope this helps. ![]()

I used the 944t axles on the 86 944turbo trailing arm fits just right. Cheers. ![]()

well i can confirm that '87 944S axles are 25 splines and not interchangeable with VW CVs.
silverbullet, i just came back to this post and saw you had info i am requesting in a different one (i am way to scrambled at the moment ![]() are the axles 21" (measure CV mounting surface on the output flange to the stub axle)? |

Hi Zen,
I just came back with the measurements under the car, I can't exactly measure the axles accurately but with the measuring tape, yes its about 21'' from output flange to stub axle. Hope it helps ![]() ![]()

exactly what i was looking for. there was just concern over the added length of the T181 CV. sounds like it is a non-issue.

alex, i can't seem to find it, but several months ago we had a very detailed thread on options in this area including output flange and CV options. i still have yet to fit mine up. that will be happening in the next two months though.

I use www.pelicanparts.com as a cross referance manual.
They are showing that these axle assemblies are the same. Manual transmission only. 1. 1985 1/2 - 1987 (944 and 944S) 2. 1987-1988 (924s) 3. 1986 (944 turbo) 1987 and later turbo axles use a differant spline pattern than VW so you would have to use only porsche cv's. Hope this helps. If you need any more specific measurements let me know. ![]()

I don't really know if they would be the same. The differance in years might be as simple as a different spline length or something like that. If you find a set for sale just ask the seller to count the spines and measure the length. if they are the same as the earlier ones they should work.
