front mount oil cooler
guys I'm building a GL out of my 71 Super Beetle and have installed a 72 front apron and plan to install an engine oil cooler behind it between it and the spare tire hole. Is there any concern about making the oil travel this far. I'm going to be doing all kinds of driving and i'm running a 1776 drilled for full flow with an external oil filter and deep sump. What size lines (I.D.) should i run from the front to the back? What size oil cooler should i have if i plan to remove the dog house cooler and run a porsche fan shroud?

Hi
I've done this many times, it works fine. Use 1/2 ID hose. Steve

Hi
I used a Mazda one on a 1641 and worked fine. I also used 16 row Sereck on a high reving 1600 rally car and on a 2.1 WBX I used fairly large cooler with a Sereck thermostat. Warm oil is important so you will need a thermostat. Steve

One important thing is that you do not oversize the cooler. I have a 90 pass Mesa cooler mounted between the bottom of the front bumper and the frame head ( I cut the apron). Let me tell you, even on the 116deg day that i test drove it, the oil didn't get to operating temp. Most likely my thermostat is broken. But I can attest to the tremendous cooling power of a front mount. I used .5 OD aluminum tubing for the main sections with a few rubber joints in between. Does anyone know the correct connections for the CB Oil thermostat??? |

I was running a 96-plate Mesa in between there on my '72. Motor was drysumped with 3/4 lines running to the front by way of the passenger running board. The cooler has a slight "bend" to it. Same radius as the spare tire well. Worked well for me.

I'm using the RX7 cooler up front with -8 AN lines to my drysump tank. The oil takes about 20 mins to come up to operating temp (180F) and the datalogger with a probe in the DS tank registers between 180F and 190F during a really hard drive in 35c weather.
Works for me. Sandeep |

FWIW the RX-7 oil cooler have a t-stat already built in. IMO the RX-7 cooler is the best out there for VWs IF you can fit it somewhere.
Later today I can show some horrible mock up photos of an RX-7 cooler on my 57 Oval if anyone is interested? The RX-7 cooler likes -10AN (5/8" ID) which is the biggest lines you can get on a VW engine.

If you were mounting it at the front, you wouldn't want a thermostat in it anyway?

rx 7 cooler
i purchased a used rx7 cooler and lines and was wondering 1) how the thermostat worked (does it still allow flow just not through the cooler) because my case has the gene berg pump/ cover and is plugged for full flow cooling and filtering
2) And which line was the inlet and which is the outlet? There is one on top of the tank and one on the side of the tank

There is a tech article about the RX7 oil cooler on the main page here. The best RX7 cooler is the second gen RX7's cooler.
