Homemade Kerscher style r. disc brakes.

Hello.
My search for a 944 rear dic brk. set has come to an and. The only brk. parts I could locate were the early rear 944 Hubs . No discs no calipers etc. As I also have both rear calipers of an early Golf 2 I plan on doing my own rear disc brk. setup which in the end should look similar and work like a Kerscher (or CB) setup. I have to machine my own caliper carrier brackets. As far as ý could see on some pictures the rear caliper spacer or bracket is machined out of steel and also doubles as a bearing cap. Is that true? (thats Kerscher and CSP unlike the CB kit which still uses the original VW bearing cap) Has someone fabricated his own rear caliper brackets for the Golf Calipers? And is it possible to use different rotors (BMW, Audi or similar which could be used with little mach. work) than the 944 rotors ones to go on the Porsche rear hubs? I think that the 944s rotor thickness is way too much for the Golf rear caliper. Any tips on this subject or information on the original Kerscher rear disc conv. would be nice. Thank's a lot.

Hmm... Why not go with a 944 rear disc setup? If you have a IRS rear, it's a simple bolt-on affair.

Hi Sprintstar
I want to use my Fuchs wheels under stock fenders. As far as I know they wont fit under the stock rear fenders with the 944 rear brakes. The car is already lowered and it looks like the tires would (on 15x6 inch et 36 Fuchs) rub on the fender lips if the track gets wider. (appr. 1 inch per side with 944 stoppers) With 7 inch wide et 23 Fuchs (or cookicutters) it is impossible. Cost factors aside that's the main reason why I'm looking to fabricate my own rear dic setup. I have acces to almost any kind of metal machining tool including CNC. Ýf I can find a suitable rotor from VW or an other manufacturer, I'll have my own hubs and caliper carriers(for Golf calipers) fabricated. And I'm seriosly planning to make these two parts available to all GL fans but that would take some time. A friend who manufactures aftermarket replacement drums and rotors for VW's looks forward to produce the 944 style hub and Golf caliper carriers as soon as I'm done with my setup.( And testing of course!) Any suggestions tips?

I understand your concerns. I was sorely disappointed too when I found out that my BEAUTIFUL Fuchs will not clear the fenders too....

And for your info, it's not just the rears, the fronts will not clear as well.

I figure it's a cost vs. performance issue at the end of the day. The stock 944 brakes will out-brake any other front/rear setup and the only additional money incurred will be for widened fenders. If you want to retain the look, you can go for 1" widened fenders. You cannot tell them apart from the stock ones.

Of if you want all-steel fenders, you can cut and add a 1" strip yourself.

I wish you success. And hey... If I need stuff machined, can I buzz ya?

Sprint.

Hi Sprint.
Thanks for your response. Of course I'd like to help with machined parts. As far as the mods to the fenders I prefer to stay with the stock fenders as my car is all original was never welded or hit or overhauled. But it needs to be repainted soon. My intention is to keep the car as clean and stock looking as possible and just to refine it in those areas where the factory cut a few corners. Then who needs all disc brakes or sophisticated susp. with only 50 horses to play with. The way I see the German Look Beetle is, that the type 1 standart bodied sedan is more like an early 911 Porsche with its all torsion bar suspension, lighter weight and driving antiques. Not to forged the beautiful classic styling (for both the early 911 and the type 1 sedan). The 1303 Supers on the other hand are more like the later C2 series 911's with the technical improvements (and added weight unfortunately!). Add a coil susp. to the rear, 944 brakes alround and a powerful type 4 engine you end up with a C2 in Beetle terms. That's of course my way of looking to the GL Beetle theme. I would like to build my 1303 that way and add a 100 mm bore 76,4 stroke fuel injected type 4 engine (that would be a 2/3 scale 911 C2 engine displacement wise). My choice of wheels would be the 16 inch ''Baby'' Cup wheels. (I guess those 6 & 8 inch C2 wheels should fit under the stock fenders with the 944 binders) Than I would badge the car ''1303 C2/3''. Just for fun.

Nice interesting interpretation!!!

For me, I see the Standards as compared to the Porsche 356, as they are both of a older design and have torsion bars all around. And the rears came with swing axles too?

The 911 has got struts in front, so it's only fair the Supers be likened to them... Also they got IRS in the back, which the Suoers got as well. I know beginning '69, all Standards got IRS in the rear, but in my part of the world, swings remained standard on the Standard (pun unintended). Hehe...

And to me, the Type I engined Supers are more 912 than 911, since the 912 ran the 356 engine which looks so much like the Type I ppwerplant. Hehe... Now, a Type IV engined Super is much closer to the real McCoy....

I love my Baby Porsche!!!

Sprint.
