No Distributor
Good morning, when you go distributor-less, is there a way to get around using the distributor drive gear.

Not really, it just becomes a spacer, or you could make a spacer, but why? One day you may need that gear in an emergency situation

Oh yeah... the extra hole makes a great breather port.

you must remove it , otherwise the brass gear on the crankshaft will be destroyed

Hi, from what I have noted, the distributor drive gear, must remain. When I was buildings a friend type one, until I installed the distributor drive gear , I had excessive crankshaft end play. It took the dive gear installed in order for the end play to be set. Let me be clear, both the brass gear and distributor drive gear are needed.

Hi
The pinion drive gear will rise when you turn the motor over forwards and it will munch the brass gear. The first thing I do when building an air cooled VW is fit the pinion in the case with the shims and hold it down with a dissy. I always make sure that the pinion hole has no wear marks or groves that would stop the pinion from beng removed if needed. Steve

Hi
It shouldn't make any difference, all VW factory replacement motors were shipped without the pinion drive fitted. If it did make a difference that is a cause for concern. Steve
