Interestingly, I've wondered whether spoilers like this up to the so-called Whale tail actually produces downforce for stablility. As far as liking it is concerned, I would say yes if it actually functions.
As far as air flow and engine cooling concerns go, I am not the person to ask. I would toss this much out there, though ... This is offered by a shop which deals with performance VWs. Additionally, one of the photos has one on an older Beetle with a ventless lid.
