wanting to add wheels but have no knowledge

lok i had a 74 std beetle until a old lady killed it. im looking to get a super so i can do the german look thing. i want to add the new jetta wheels. are they 16 or 17? and what is the width? i saw post of where you either add spacers or trim the stub axle off the rear, for fit. looks easy. but what about the drivers front with the speedo cable? how do you go about this? i dont mind if the wheel sticks out from the fender a little.

also with lowering, how low can i go with lowered strutts? i cant afford maxx . can i lower it 2 inches and be ok? what about the steering linkage at this height? any probs? i saw were you might have to trim for it to work?

and lastly. with the tire size, would 195 -205 / 40-45 series be about right?
