Why not using the obvious?: 914 tranny. Use the later side-shifter versions and get the whole coupling and shift rod parts with it. Make supports where the 914 stuff would 'want' them.
Its much stronger and you have 5-speeds as well. Looks like an ideal price/quality combo to me  Good luck, Walter
