What to do to make a T1 tranny handle 300 FtLbs of torque?
What to do? Is it even logical? Should I just try a different tranny all together. I'm planning on 250 HP and pushing it

Forget it!!
go for the 915 or g50 from the start. I have a single cover box with all the tricks in the book and its going to break. mayby it wil last me a couple of months. but at the first dragrace...snap! Vin

you can make a typ1 irs box hold up but have to spend the money.
know of a few people who push upwards of 350bhp through one with slicks and there still in one peace.dont get me wrong you can break them but i know of people who have broke pro-drag box's with 120bhp iam putting 170bhp and slicks through my pro-comp type 1 irs with no problems yet and intend to put more than 250 through it next year. a porsche box is not the be all and end all of it,first gear is a week point and its a lot cheaper to rebuild a type 1 box with all the right bits than a stock 901/915 with all the wrong gear ratios. have you thought of trying a typ2 irs box? cheers rob

Yes the typ2 box is a strong unit. you want the one with 5 ribs around the diff section. Gear ratios is wrong for racing thou.
The horsepower is no problem for the type1 but the torque is going to snap the half meter long inputshaft with the stupid conection sleeve. t1 is no good for higher than 7000rpm either. bearings will seize. I will put my money in a 915 box. expensive to rebuild... yes! but they vil support a 3,6 twin turbo porsche engine! Also the best you can do for your gearbox is take up all the slack in the system with the cluch before you launch hard... just grind the cluch a little before you sidestep...

I just bought a irs box from a type 181 with one cover. Are these strong boxes? Would it stand 200 Bhp? What do I need to change to handle the 200 Bhp?

i'm thinking 915 or T2
i think there's some guy near me that has a 914 or 915 just sitting in his driveway doing nothing, i'll check that out blahhhh no money.... i just have to get past all the rust now, it's such a pain, i'm sure most of you know. ...spending 60 hours fixing rust is no fun thing

what about gears and the center shaft and all that?
a type one center shaft looks like it would snap under 100 FTlbs, let alone 300 the gears can't be all that stong either bahhhhhh! haha, oh man. this isn't really helping so much so far, no one really has any straight answers on waht definately would work as far as type one's two's porsche swaps, or what about drag boxes?

HP and torque doesn't grenade transaxles. How you apply them does. Call a reputable transaxle builder and talk to them about your application, intended use and budget. I went with Kevin at KCR and was impressed with his input, quality and $$$...

The T181 will usually have the strongest "O" type 4.12 R&P. The flanges are the same spline as Bug, but they take the larger Bus CVs. The only upgrades you need to do is change out the stock fine tooth 3rd and 4th for Bus 002 gears, and install a Superdiff or a ZF or Quaife. |

I did check the code and it is an AV box. Does the bus gears fit in the 181 box without changes? Does anyone have some experiance with the quaife diffs? I know you can bye them with t1 splines or t2 splines. Wich one is the best? The greater flange size doesn't matter because I have the porsche 944 turbo arms so I need them anyway. THx for the advice.
