that will depend on a number of variables:

- How narrow of a beam?
- What type and year of car?
- Dropped spindles?
- wheel Offset?
- Do your brakes widen the track width?
- what type of wheels?
- How low is the car?

So, as you see there is no real answer to your (very General) question.
If the car is essentially stock then yes, you probably have room for wider tires.

The best way to find out is to look underneath for available clearance at full lock in each direction, and straight ahead. Also, keep in mind that you may want to have a friend sit on the front bumper to account for compression of the front suspension.

Good luck!
