You are looking for a 912E (to be exact). This is a rare car (basically a 911 with T4 motor). The tranny is geared for the T4, but is a 915 tranny. Jake Raby has a daily driver 912E, and a extra tranny he is going to use for a future T1 GL project. www.aircooledtechnology.com
To get the tranny in the T1 bug@5speed is a good way to go.

Hi Mathias,
the 912-gearbox is not the best gearbox to recommend in your special case. In the 912 a type 901 gearbox with short ratios was installed. It was no 915. For the type 4 engine that you have I would recommend a 914-gearbox. Their ratios are much longer and they fit perfectly to huge type 4s. A 915 is not necessary. The 914s stand upto 270 Nm easily and are much cheaper and easier to get than 915. Besides 915 are about 52-55 kg in weight, a 914 is about 42 kg. If you´ve got more questions, please contact me by mail to info@bugat5speed.de, or have a look on my site www.bugat5speed.de Cheers Martin Bott Last edited by Bugat5speed; September 12th 2007 at 04:03. |

The 912E had the 923 transmission. Basically a 915 close ratio 5speed (for the 4cyl) with a 901 bellhousing (to bolt up to 2L type4) and i believe T2 output shafts. Only 2000? were made.

OK thanks for the info.
Martin: I will contact you soon reg. conversion kit. I will try to get ahold of a 914 tranny then. Is there different versions of this or are all 914 the same? So I know what too look for.

Mathias,
the best gearbox for a conversion is the pre ´72 version with the shift mechanism at the nose cone (mainly 914 1.7). For this gearbox you do not need to buy different inside shift rods. The later 914 needs the 3 shiftrods inside plus the side cover where now the shift mechanism is placed. These parts easliy cost 200 Euro as used parts. So, if you´ve got the choice.... There is no or no real difference in ratios on the 2 types of 914. The only one that differs completely is the 914/6. This has shorter ratios which are similiar to the ones of the 901-gearbox. But on the other hand it is so, that those who own such a gearbox won´t give it away or would ask for much more money than for a 914/4-one. So, don´t worry about this! Looking forward to your mail Martin Bott |

@Wally,
yes you´re right. The mg-case is not that heavy. But on the other hand I do not see a front or rear mount on the gearbox (-: The 42 kgs for the 914 are already with thes parts. But why pay for a 915 when the 901/914 is sufficient. Parts are still more expensive also. But any way Mathias, whatever you decide to mount in, I can help you with parts if you like.
