944 suspension
Hi, i have posted a thread under the brake section aswell. I am looking to uprate my 1303 brake system with a 944 2.5l system. i have been told that the reartrailing arms from a 944 may be the same size as my bug therefore allowing me to change the whole back end and not mix and match parts. Also will the front struts of a 944 bolt on a 1303 allowing me to change he anti roll bar to a porsche one and just bolt the lower arm to the ball joint? Cheers Dan

The early style 944 alu arms wil bolt on to your rear with no modification.
I think pre 1987 cars Driveshafts require mod to gearbox. new output flanges |

The early 944 steel arms are vertically identical to the 03's so are interchangable.... but the CV's are of a different size diameter and thickness.
944 CV's are same diameter as type 2's but are slightly (4mm) thicker. If your using a type 1 box you need to change the output flanges for trekker items All alloy arms widden the track of the vehicle over standard by varying amounts depending on year.... later wider, earlier narrower hope this helps chris |

I just put 944 alloy arms on my Ghia pan and the one modification that has to be done is the replacement of the bushing that the attachment bolt feeds through. The VW bolt has a larger shaft than the 944 bushing which means you buy a polyurethane 3 piece bushing set and install it. Pretty painless to do. You just use a big screwdriver to pry off the metal 'caps' off the std 944 bushings and you'll see that it all comes apart nicely.

Weren't there soem one year early ally arms that bolted on with no track increase? Anybody know if they used longer axles?

The pre-86 N/A 924's (non-turbo) & pre 85.5 944's used the steel arms (I'm told)

Hi
I fitted steel 944 arms to my daily driver 1303, they give about 25 mm per side track increase (wheel bolt to wheel bolt face). As the car has low power output I just used the stock bug axles so the CVs all hooked up as normal. I cant remember the exact info about a 944 stuff on the front but the info is here, just let your fingers do the walking. Steve

That increase in track is totally due to the 944 brakes. The steel 944 TAs have exactly the same dimensions as a stock Bug IRS TA.
