The gaps are designed right into the shrouds to make them cool better....

Nice looking installation Andeas.
I have a querey that is open to all to respond: In a horizontal installation like Andeas' the belt twists 90deg between bottom pully and the idler pulleys, then it twists 90deg again between the idler pulley and the fan. If the idler pully were set at an angle then the belt would not be required to twist as much. The idler pully would however, be required to be tangential to the bottom pulley (and the fan?) so that would restict its location to <45 deg (the ideal angle) but I would expect that any reduction in twist would have been beneficial for belt and idler bearing longevity. Just a thought? Clive |

Understand your point and you are probably right but that would mean you would have to space the idler pulleys further apart. There could be clearance issues with the distributor, possibly requires a larger bottom pulley and of course a longer belt. Larger idler pulleys could be beneficial. Would be interresting to see how it works, although probably not as compact. But then again, getting 20.000 Km's out of the belt as it is in this configuration is good enough for me

I agree it would not look so elegant and certainly the wider idler pulleys might be in the way since to get any real improvement they would have to be engine width apart? Alternatively, you could substitute a bevel gear for the engine
pulley and then you would only need a pair of horizontal pulleys.......................... And then onto theoretical Physics.. |

Oldskool. made my first one with steel plate, steel pulleys and fibreglass shrouds in '91. My dad had his a year earlier so it basically evolved from what he has started.
This one does not really take that long to do, its just time is precious at the moment. I'd start a little production run if I had the time.

Corvair or Reichert-style horizontal fan setups are perfectly possible on T1 etc, Chris' 914 setup has the alternator THERE as the SCCA rules require it to be in the stock 914 location.
(same SCCA rules say nothing on where the cooling fan goes/works or even exists, most of the F-prod 914 setups use ram air via flex sewer pipes from the headlight holes.) LA Performance in the UK still makes T4 upright fan housing using teh 911 fan, a T1 shouldn't be impossible or even any harder. (I started fabbing a corvair-fan one myself awhile back, then got sidetracked... now I'm considering running a T1 fan upside down//backwards to suck air from the bottom 8-0 ) Last edited by piledriver; June 23rd 2011 at 09:32. |
