right. after pulling gearbox apart, looks like the shift rod pieces i got with conversion parts, are the same as whats in box already!! only thing i need to change is the long shift rod that sticks out the nose cone and thats the only bit i aint got ok. so now i'm gonna cut the 914 rod and weld the 1303 rod to it. hopefully making something i can use. the sun's out in england now, we dont get it much so really missing my bug one way or another this sucka's getting done

Without measuring it, I would suggest doing the following. Look at the wear patterns on the ring and pinion gear. It should be in the middle to root. If your wear pattern is there, then put it back together with the same number of gaskets as it came apart with. You should be fine.

well my box is all in and hooked up, thanks for the advice. now what i need to know is, does the spigot bearing need fitting in the flywheel if using a type 4 flywheel? engine is a wasserboxer but same flywheel. not using a 914, jus standard bus one.

I think you will find you need a 914 flywheel with the Porsche box, it has a longer reach into the gearbox and has the support bearing already in it.

thanks for the reply. i'll have a go with me measuring stick to see what i can work out once the engine's back together. cheers

914 flywheel
Pablo is correct, the input shaft is longer on the 914 transmission, so get a 914 flywheel have it machined (lighted if desired), but it already has the bearing and will work perfectly. If you can get it balanced with the crank you will not believe how smooth the engine will be. I purchased one from Jake and he balances it down to which bolt on the clutch goes into which hole as part of his engine kits as well as the clutch itself. It is amazing how smooth it runs with his balance job. But if you can balance it with the crank, well worth the effort and the extra $ IMHO.
