Well It has an hour of run time so far. I was pulling the lifters to inspect them and got 2 pair done. I cut my left thumb while doing it. I finished that cylinder, washed the cut out, put some triple antibiotic cream on it and a band-aid on it and went to work that night. The next day it woke me up. Thumb was throbbing and swollen about twice its normal size. Went to the Dr., got a big shot of antibiotic in the a$$ and sent to a hand specialist because it was nasty red from the tip of the thumb well into the hand. It is much better now and I am going for my last (I hope) follow up today at 3:15. You hand is not worth much without a usable thumb.
Moral of the story. Break-in oil with all that ZDDP in a small cut can turn ugly quick.

Wow, glad you you get to keep the thumb.

Thumb is still with me. I has stopped draining so as soon as it has closed up I can get back to it.

Last follow up was today and I have a green light to start back. Might get back to it this afternoon.
Jonathan, I hope you dry sump project goes well. Did you get your new ECU sorted out?

Any news from the holidays?

Everyone told me its not a good idea to daily drive an aircooled bug. I agree, if the engine has a distributor and you use cheap engine parts... OR you have an early car without the decklid vents or you neglect to add an oil cooler with fan...

I need some more shims for the pushrod tubes. When the engine is warmed up, the "O"rings on the outboard ends start to show and oil starts to seep from them. I ordered another set of .132" shims but they are a bit too much so I ordered what I hope will be a set of .040" shims that should do the job. I have over a hour of run time on it and have pulled the lifters after each 30 minutes and they look good. After I get the shims in, I will up my idle jets and get that dialed in and get another hour of run time done before I stab it in the car.

I did not get PR tube shims in time for this weekend so I did the disc brake upgrade to my son's 73 GL. Also di the front sway bar upgrade. Got everything finished and was putting my tools in my car and had Ryan throw the wheels on so he could try out his new stuff. The wheels hit the calipers so we were done. They are the early wide lip style Riviera's that you see on a few 914's. I guess they are earlier than I thought. I do have a set of 8 spokes that he can run untill he finds a set of 2L Fuchs.
Anyway, I got the PR tube shims in the mail today. My next set of off days should bring some progress.
