Powder coating / crackle finish

I've had a few pieces powder coated in a smooth finish which look great but wondered if anyone has had anything crackle finished, like you get on the head cases of Ferraris etc
My powder coater is away so I don't if he can do it or if I should start looking else where.

Are these finishes a form of powder coating or more conventional spraying? and is crackle what's it's called or just what you see.
Cheers

Yes it is a type of powder coating. You can get it in a spray paint to, but i've only seen black. The powder coat is called "wrinkle finish" i know it comes in black, red, and dark blue. I'm sure theres more colors out there. If your powder coater can order the powder then he can do it. Becarful what you coat with it. Since its textured it holds dirt and grease, and can be hard to clean. Unless you can hit it with alot of water pressure, or don't mind scrubbing with a toothbrush .

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but I also have a powdercoating question. I have a set of four porsche cup 2 wheels that I am looking to powdercoat. Because I purchased them seperately, One of the rear wheels (17x9) is chrome. I am wondering if there is a way to de-chrome that wheel so that i end up with the same finish on all four. Or if possibly I can just have it powder coated without de-chroming it, and end up with an undistinguishible finish.

It seems that my attempt to save money by purchasing the wheels seperately is ending up to be a pain in my side, and I don't want to buy a new wheel because the quote that i got for a regular painted wheel was $500

thanks in advance.

Take it to your local chrome plater, they can remove the chrome.
I had this done to a bumper that I wanted to paint - worked fine.

Mrweasel is 100% correct :agree: . If you don't strip the chrome the powder coating can chip off. The same goes for painting over chrome. I tried sandblasting a chrome part before powder coating, but it still chiped easy. A chrome shop can dip it in thier acid tank and strip it very fast and easily for little cash$

I'll give them a call. I think that I will have to send it to L.A. anyways because they have the only facility that processes aluminum. You think a "steel" chrome shop could do it? Same acid tank right?

I don't think it really matters if its aluminum or steel. They both are chrome plated in the same way. After the parts are prepped they go through a copper bath, nickel bath, and chrome bath all for different times, and checked between baths for imperfections. Call a chrome shop to be sure as i'm no expert... but I did stay at a holiday inn express once!
