19 inch under original fenders.?
Hi,
I'm looking at to fit under the fenders of my 54 oval GL other rim's thant "simple 17 inch.." but is that possible.. I'm rather thinking to get in 8x19" rim's... (18 inch is too simple to get in. ) Has somebody already seen's that?? or got the solution..?? model is a 54 standard, chassis 67 automatic with 944 atmo brakes on front has a narrowed axe or 4cm.. if you have any informations about a oval or an other 1200 with 19"... let me know.. just to see if that's possible... thanks a lot david

loolk's okey.. but to drive..?
hi,
thank's for reply.. the car look's more like a shox car having a ride on a trailer than on the road.. I dont think the car is able as you said to steer... I'm more interesseted to have a car that I can drive.. on the road.. around corners..too.. there are a few corners from my home to my office.. and that 54 should be (one day) a small daily driver.. I'll forget the 20" inches.... but I still belive that 19" inch could eventualy fit under 54 fenders..and keep steering.. (I hope).. david

almost any diameter rim should fit under a beetle fender and still be able to turn.
remember that a stock tire (165 sr 15) has a diameter of 25.5" as you increase the size of your rim, you can decrease the size (aspect ratio) of your tire and this should accomodate the increased rim size. For example: 205/60/15 = 24.7" diameter 205/50/16 = 24.1" diameter 204/40/17 = 23.5" diameter 215/35/18 = 23.9" diameter 225/35/19 = 25.2" diameter So you see, any of these tires can be fitted under a beetle's fenders. Alot has to do with how low you make the car and how wide your wheels are & what offset they have.

I saw a set of 17 in rims with 145s on them at a show. They looked sharp, but any taller and you may run out of room for rubber or much of it anyway. The ride really decreases as the rubber gets shorter. I would think the handling would decrease to as you would have to keep them fairly hard to keep the rims from hitting the ground on a big bump. A 19 in rim with 25 inch tires would probably fit nicely and still give you the best of both worlds with about 3 inches of sidewall height. A seven inch rim with an eight inch wide tire should fit if you don't lower it much and have it offset properly. Just my observation.

18inch front/19inch rear ??
I have thought of 18inch fronts and 19 rears. I have seen that combination and it looks good. I admitt its unusual but wheels at the front can get a bit too big looking and this option seems to work. It also looks good with 17inch front and 18inch rears. There is a bug in a VW trnds mag with this combo and it looks good to.
Cheers DAvid

hello elrooky...
For the wheel, you could find easily 8*19, and, on these type of wheel, you can put 215/35/19 tyre..... for example : front : 8*19 + 215/35/19 tyre rear : 9*19 or 8.5*19 with 225/35/19 Benoît

Hello
Have you installed that 8 inch wide tire in the front before coxy-ben? Ive been looking for 18in wheels that have a 7.5 inch width but it seems that the only ones they make are at least 8 inches. What would you suggest the correct offset be for these wheels? Thanks a lot! Clint

I have seen 18 and 19" wheels that are 7.5" wide. Pick up an issue of Sport Compact Car and read the wheel ads. You'll find what you're looking for.

Thanks
This is true, however there are few 7.5 that are 5 x 130mm Porsche bolt pattern. I found one but its still $301 each wheel without tires. I found a nice wheel that is 18 x 8 with a 40mm offset I believe. Should that offset be a problem? Thanks Clint

To reply to dgluyas's comment on the 18" front and 19" rear tires , I think thats a great idea . The new Dodge Vipers are running the same type of set-up. Obviously a Beetle and a Viper are not in the same class , but at least you can help a Beetle handle more like the Viper . I currently don't own a beetle , but the wheels inside my head are always turning and planning my next Type 1(I have owned three in the past) . I actually have been kicking around the idea of running the two different sizes . I hope you find a good combination , and when you do , let us know . Axl .:haveadrin

Hey , Justdubbin , those are some pretty nasty wrecks . It happens all too many times , people have the money to buy fast cars , and the lack of brains to drive them . There are too many stupid drivers out there who think that they are invincable , and that they can do what ever they want . And not just Vipers and Corvettes and such , but also Hondas and other pocket rockets . I hope that I don't sound too cynical , but really , I am sick and tired of seeing kids scrapped off the road because they thought they beat the odds . Anyways , not to get off on a tangent .... I just wish that people would realize that they are not ten feet tall and bullet-proof . Axl
