Cracked Crankcase?
Hi All,
I've recently removed my TIV from my 77 camper to rebuild and noticed (to my dismay) what appeared to be JB weld (a general purpose metal bonding agent) on the flat portion of the crankcase just to the right of the oil filter mount. After chipping away at the compound I still have yet to notice any damage. Does anyone know of a good test that I can do to locate some kind of minute fracture, ie. a metal stain, etc.? Thanks, Larry Cortright |

Use a dye penatrant kit to find cracks in aluminum. Magnaflux manufactures one, I'm sure there are others.

UV Liquid penetrant NDT (Non Destructive Testing). Do a search on the web for NDT or Non Destructive Testing. You can purchase DIY kits.
