tie rod hitting sway bar?

my tie rods are hitting my sway bar on my '79, but only when fully turned right or left. i was told that on a car this late i didn't need the kit to flip my tie rods, but i assume this isn't just something i'm to ignore and live with either.

and yeah, on this side i could rotate the clamp and it'd help, but i did it on the other and it still hits, although not nearly as bad.

my setup: 85.5 brakes f/r, stock vw everything else, old 2" lowered struts (topline?).

any ideas?

yes use a flip it kit and mount the tie rods from above. i think it's even worse when the strut is fully extended and at the very least your mot man will fail it. don't ignore this as it is dangerous.

Weird, off topic but I personally know three other Dave Taylors.

we have zero vehicle checks here in illinois or kentucky, so my entire front end could be wired together and no one would care, but i definitely want to do it right instead of ghetto-fabulous.

and oddly enough, i know at least two other Eatoniashoprats. ok, not really.

looks like i'll be shopping for a flip kit.

Hi

I tried a flip kit on my daily 1303 and it introduced really bad bump steer, that's the reason they don't sell them for 2 bolt strut cars.

I have the same problem, so I can either raise the car a lot or raise the car a little and put a spacer under the front sway bar mounts.

common with late model

Dave your tie rods unless already flipped by someone should attach to the spindle from above. I think trying to flip them would introduce some severe angles and may cause the bump steer steve metioned.
The only solution I`ve seen is as steve suggests is to lower the swaybar.
Maybe John at Topline has an answer I haven`t ordered my versa struts yet
but I`ll probabaly have the same problem when I get them.

your using 944 stub axles correct? the tie rods mount from underneath as standard. you need a bump steer kit to convert to on top mounting. beetles normally mount from underneath and the flip kit was sold to convert them to bottom mount for really lowered cars to eliminate bump steer. looking at the angle of your tie rod at the moment having it mounted from above will give it a better angle and improve the bump steer that you must have now, set up like it is. the steering arms are mounted lower on the 944 stub axles compared to 1303 as well.

here's my set up on my early 1303 converted to 944 n/a hubs, mk1 golf struts fitted with coil over conversion(2" shorter than 1303) and late 1303 control arms with adjustable track control arm conversion, also relocated inner mount because of amount of lowering.late 1303 steering rack conversion. and flip it kit fitted to convert to top mounted tie rods to eliminate hitting on anti roll bar.

very nice setup, 1303R, especially for a daily driver. i've only driven mine in and out of the garage and around a few times, so i haven't figured out how mine's going to feel yet. i can't get my stinkin' brakes to bleed correctly, so i can only go places where there's nothing to hit, haha

Thanks, are you using beetle or 944 master cylinder? I converted to 944 mc when i did everything else as i read on here that the beetle mc does not have enough volume to work the large n/a 944 brakes

i'm using the 944 19/23 master cylinder, and it's brand new, but it's acting like it's bad. i don't have any line leaks either and they're all brand new. it's a huge mystery that i wish i could figure it out 'cause it's no fun to drive without being able to stop!

Hi

On the Porsche MC question, I used a stock 19 mm bug one with 4 spots all round on my old 1302 and now on my daily 1303 I'm using early Type 3 fronts (42mm piston) and 944 rears with 2 piston Carrera Brembos all with a stock MC.
