BN4 gas heater in a 1303
Ok, so my father just got a 73 Thing (181 baby!) and he has a BN4 gas heater in that beast... and man does it pump out some heat!
Anyways, i was thinking this could be a great addition to my 74 super beetle. So i went and asked if i could take the heater out of the thing and see where it would fit in my beetle. the only place out of the passenger compartment is in the trunk, and the only place there is room in the trunk is above the gas tank. So my question is, is this a SAFE spot to mount it? If i mount it, i would have it compleatly isolated from the gas tank, but it would have to hover above the tank about an inch or so to fit under the bonnet. The exhaust would route out the center of the heater, then to the inner fender well where it would exit in the inside of the fender well (just like on the thing!) i would have to create some insulator plates to keep the exhaust heat away from the gas tank, and also insulate the heater itself from the tank with a insualtor plate (some sheet metal and maybe some insuation wrap around the exhaust. The intake for the fire would be easy to do, taking air from the inside of the trunk. The warm air pipes i was thinking of routing to the stock paper hoses inside the trunk area (the ones that go into the dash, to supply warm air to the defrost, and other vents. i would have to make a custom shroud to direct to two pipes (left and right) into the cabin. Intake for the fan (that moves the warmed air) would just suck from the inside of the trunk. With all this sucking going on in the trunk, i was thinking of make a vent to supply the trunk with air, so it does not starve for air or try to suck it from small holes and make whissles. So what do you guys think? Any one know a place to get a BN4 heater and all the parts like the switchs, pulls, and the fuel pump at? Thanks! Jonathan

That looks like a newer unit, how much do those run (USD)?
I was thinking of a older unit exactly like the one that comes in a 73 Thing. I have seen them for around $150, so i would think it would cost me about $200- 250 all said and done. I can mount one above the gas tank no problem it seams, i mocked one up today kinda. But is is safe so close to the gas tank even with insulation between the heater/ exhaust and the tank(sheet metal and insulation) How hot do the exhaust pipes get with these things? Also, the newer unit you have looks way smaller, what are the dimentions of yours? Thanks, Jonathan

I don't think I would put it that close to the tank.

Chicken! Seriously, why not? Campers run with the fuel tank just above and forwards of the engine? The Heater I have is a brand new eberspacher which have all sorts of intelligent cutoffs/overload protections etc. I am far more concerned about my fuel lines in my engine bay than I am about the proximity of the eberspacher to the fuel tank! I have no idea of price in US $, as I like in the UK and we use £ Wasnt cheap, but worth every penny! Cya, Sam C
