944 torsion bars?

Would I be right in assuming that the torsion bars from a 87 944 will fit into the torsion housing on my bug?

I'm collecting the 944 spring plates at the weekend and have been offered the 944 torsion bars as well,

The same guy has all the brake parts I needed in the other thread too, so

Winning find. So long as you are IRS they should fit - post some details of the ride

I'm converting to IRS from swing axle, does that make a difference?

I'll be using the weld on IRS brackets available from M7.

I checked earlier on 'shop talk forums' and a guy was being advised to put the porsche torsion arms and spring plates onto his swing axle torsion tube, so I assumed they would fit.

here's the thread...

The ride is a 1972 1200 bug getting a sohc n/a 2.5L Subaru transplant using Rjes bellhousing, IRS, discs all round, BMW mini headlights, 944 gauges and custom dash, plus a few more mods yet to be worked out.

I had a thread on VZI, but the project has changed direction a bit so will put some pics and details up on here through the week

If you use the 944TBs then they ought to be the 23.5mm dia ones (std 944) that will uprate the suspension a little bit to cope with the extra weight of the Scooby. If you want a higher performance then the 25.5mm M030 bars will provide that although you are likely to pay a hefty premium fom a Posche supplier. The 944 TBs are the same length as the 1302/3 bars and will therefore require the through hole on the spring plate cover. The classic 944 alloy spring plate cover looks pretty although you will need to cut off the projections and fiddle around with the bushes and maybe spacers to clear the camber adusting bolt. I'm not sure that the eccentric camber adjusting bolt can be accommodated with the standard pressed metal spring plate cover. If that is the case then you may have to use the 1302/03 spring plate (no adjuster).
You might also consider a 944 14mm AR bar that you can bracket off the TB housing. If you do PM me and I have some photos and some comments.
When I did ours I had the advantage of a complete 924S (944 with alloy trailing arms) rear suspension that had everything attached. The only thing I changed was the driveshafts because the 924S was an auto box (uneaqual length drive shafts. If anybody was considering a 944 suspension and/or brake installation I would strongly advise obtaining a complete rear suspension unit as it would be cheaper and contains all the necessary bits.

Thanks guys, I'll wait until I pick up all the parts at the weekend, then I'll put some pics up of what I have.

I don't mind fabricating some bits if I need to

Will these urethane bushes fit into my alloy 944 trailing arms?

They are listed on machine 7 as 1302/3 irs bushes.

And has anyone got a pair of irs conversion jigs they could loan/rent me?

For the sake of being repetitive and boring - Yes (I answered the Vzi post earlier)
