Heard a pop, now no clutch action

So I was out in the 67 Beetle last night, and about half a kilometre from home I heard a pop from the area of the pedals, and then the clutch wouldn't disengage, the pedal feels dead. I was able to make it home and coast in to the driveway. Since it was late and dark when I got in, I couldn't really inspect anything, so I'm looking for ideas as to what it may be, so that I can get parts ordered today to have a go at it on the weekend.

Prior to this, the trans. had been getting tougher to place in gear, more 1st and reverse than the others. Could this be a stretched clutch cable that finally let go, or should I be looking elsewhere?

thanks,
Ed N.

Sounds like a clutch cable or the hook broke off your clutch pedal arm.

Pull the pedal assembly and take a gander. Clutch cables are easy to replace.

If it is in fact the hook, let us know. There are a few preliminary steps to prevent that happening again. The new hooks are very prone to wear/breakage.

Thanks for the quick reply Alex. The hooks are readily available as a replacement part too? I was going to get a cable from Greg anyway last week, and forgot to remind him about it ...

I'll dig in to it tonight. Was hoping to be able to order something today to have on hand for the weekend. Maybe I should pop home at lunchtime to see if I can figure it out quickly.

thx,
Ed N.

The hooks are readily available. But as with most stuff, quality is marginal. The main issues is both the cable eye, and the hook need to be de-burred extensively. Out of the package they are littered with sharp corners. Lightly radius all sharp edges or they will eat through each other in no time. Lots of grease doesn't hurt either. Grease the heck out of the cable before install, a few dabs on the hook and eye and it will be like butter!.
