Question Heads

I am looking into building a type IV 2.0 ltr engine for my super beetle and I have some questions.....

1. Can a type 1 head be used on a type IV?

2. What size intake and exhaust do Ineed for a daily driver that should be good on fuel and power, so I can rattle the "other" imports once in a while?

3. Is a dual weber 34 ICT a good set up for this?

Type 1 heads do not fit. 42mm intake and 36mm exhaust (2.0L 914 stock sizes) are a good size for decent HP. Dual 34mm carbs is not enough, you need 40mm dells or webers with 34mm venturi in each hole so that's twice as much carb as the ICT carbs. The ICT cabs are too small to make real power. Properly tuned 40 dells can get just as good mileage and make much more power.

I thought I saw it done somewhere, with 1/2 + 1/2 pushrod tubes from TI and TIV, I'm positive that I saw that pic. with TI heads on a TIV case. I'll look for it......... JR

Hello-

I thought I saw it done somewhere, with 1/2 + 1/2 pushrod tubes from TI and TIV,

Well, SCAT heads use the 1/2+1/2 pushrod tubes.

I'm positive that I saw that pic. with TI heads on a TIV case. I'll look for it......... JR

Big problems:
T4 bore spacing = 124mm.
T1 bore spacing = 112mm.
T4 stud pattern = 96mm x 78mm (with one offset an extra 4mm)
T1 stud pattern = 81mm x 76mm

I can just aout guarantee that you did _not_ see a T1 head bolted up to a T4 :-). You likely saw the SCAT split ports...

Take care,

One question I have regarding Type IV heads has to do with fitting larger valves to a pair of Bus heads. I understand that 2.0 914 heads drop valve seats with catastrophic results sometimes, and if the Bus heads are not metalurgicly worthy of such an upgrade, then I don't want to ruin my engine while finding out.

Is it safe to install 42x36 or larger valves in '75-'79 2.0 Bus heads, or is it more cost-effective to find genuine 914 1.8 or 2.0 heads rework them?

Thanks

The 2.0 914 heads are worse for cracking......not dropped seats. The problems with dropped seats are vanished if you look to a good TIV head rebuilder.

Thanks Jake. Unless I can find some 1.8 litre heads to use, I think I will call Headflowmasters to install 42x36 valves in my 2.0 Bus heads.
