rubber bump stop

I'm looking for a little guidance and appreciate any input you folks may have...I'm installing the adjust-a-struts on my 1302 and I've found that everything fits better if I remove the metal insert from the shortened rubber bump stop that resides on the shock insert...My question: is this an acceptable procedure?...Is this metal insert critical? Without it, this rubber bump stop is free to ride along the shock rod...What is the downside to this?

( FYI, I've posed this ? on the RMMW forum w/out any responses and I have also emailed Jon @ topline, ut have not yet received a response )

Thanks for the help?
