mirror glass removal

I need to take the mirror glass out of both my inside mirror, and my drivers door mirror ('73 Ghia Coupe, my daily). Both of them have lost a good deal of the silvering, but the housings are in great shape. I'd hate to replace all of it just to do the glass.

Is there a good walk through anywhere for taking apart the inside mirror?

I assume the door mirror is straight forward. For the door mirror I was thinking about just breaking the glass and then pulling out all of the shards and residual adhesive, then gluing in the new mirror blank with butyl rubber adhesive. Does that sound reasonable?
