What type 4 motor?
I have a 1969 VW beetle that will weigh less than 1800 lbs. when complete. It has a built 4-speed with 3.88 R/P with close ratio 3rd and 4th gears. What year/model type 4 should I buy for my car. I have about $2,000 to spend on the motor including all the conversion parts. I would also appreciate any suggestions on inexpensive performance parts, You know, the most bang for the buck.

I'm not ready to buy the engine just yet. How much horsepower and tourqe can I expect to see from that engine. The car is still a long way from running I'm just looking for information.

Are you talking "built", or stock?
The 914 motors offer a pretty decent amount of bang for the buck. The 411 and 412 engines have pretty much the same specs. 1.7 (high compression) == 80 HP, ~99 lb-ft torque 1.8 (low compression) == 76 HP, ~99 lb-ft torque 2.0 (73-74 914 only) == 95 HP, ~105 lb-ft torque The 2.0 engines tend to be pricey. The 1.7s nd 1.8s tend to be a lot cheaper. The Bus versions of most of these generally are less powerful. If you are going to build an engine, you can start with just about any Type IV. The crankcases are almost the same, except the Bus ones and some 411/412 (the "sedans", maybe?) have a different oil filler and dipstick setup from the rest. --DD

I am probably going to be using a used stock engine for awhile. Thanks for the information on engine power, now I can make a more educated decision.

Sounds so nice...... I'm just not ready for my engine right now. I still have to get the car back into one piece. Thanks anyway.
