rebuiding T4 advice

Aloha,

This is my 1st type 4 rebuild.

It's a stock 2.0 solid lifters with progressive carb in a 74 Westy.
I live in Hawaii so heater boxes won't be necessary. The cabinets of the van has been removed. I'd like to make this a mild performance engine that may oneday be used as an upright.

I've torn it down. #1 intake valve seat pounding in the head.
Should I rebuild stock or next size up valves w/ minor port work?

The cam bearings are badly pitted and cam lobes are worn.
There is a -4 marking on the cam gear?
I'd like to put a new Webcam & solid lifters.
Do I need to use my stock cam gear?
Any recomendations on cam?

The local machine shop is going over all the parts. They have a Scat C35 style cam and a Webcam for Hyd lifters in stock.
I'm going to call tommorrow and see what parts are reuseable and what they recomend as well.

I also have a pair of dual 36mm Dellortto's I'd like to run on this engine.
Do I have to drill both intakes and run a t-fitting for my power brakes?

Does someone make J-pipes for type 4's, Where does the altenator bracket attach?

Sorry for such a long list.
Mahalo

More news

Machine shop said heads are too far gone.
Crank is good, still working on block, p&c.
They have rebuilt balanced rods for $65.

I'm planning on balancing everything.
Would like to get a little more Hamster power and MPG if possible.

So far needing:
Camshaft (webcam #?)
Lifters (webcam)
Rebuilt Heads for 2.0
Oil Pump (any recomendations)
Fan (mine missing a fin)
Intake Manifolds & linkage for Dual Dell's

Any ideas as to where I should shop for parts?
Trying to keep it low budget

Mahalo's

The 2L rods are the heaviest, but thats a good deal...

Webcam #86 a/b/c or combination of any (ab, bc)

Oil pump- depends on yer cooling. External cooler? Have your oil gulleies drilled and tapped so you can full flow. High capacity pump is gud. Try CB PERFORMANCE for a pump.

As for a fan, I have a spare. blasted and painted red 40 + SHIPPING. LMK

I would get larger valves, 2.0L had small valves except for the 914. Unless your heads are badly deformed from overheating, they are probably rebuildable. You should change seats/guides anyway, especially on a bus. It won't be cheap but it is necessary. Check with HeadFlowMasters for rebuild prices/exchange. 1.8L heads (carbed) had 41X34 valves, probably good for torque. I would go with a fairly mild cam for torque. European motors make some heaterbox eliminator tubes that go to a header.

You should use your stock cam gear, it is matched to your crank and block for the correct backlash. It will take a little machine work to fit to a Webcam but worth it.

Oil pump: 26mm type one pump (schedek?) from Aircooled.net should be enough. Check with Jake Raby on the mods needed to make the pump work.

Places to get parts: Aircooled.net, European Motorworks, Fat Performace.

Mahalo

Mahalo's to everyone for the great responses.
I have to go and search all my car seats and furniture for spare change to help fund my needs.
I'm hoping to order all the parts I need by next weekend.
Shipping to Hawaii is the killer.

Thanks again
Sean
