0-60

im debating between a 2 liter type 4 (slightly modded) or 1915 type 1 for my car and was wondering which would give me a better 0-60 with my stock gearbox(1973). im guessing the type 4 because of its massive torque but the 1915 should have more ponnies at a higher rpm. so im not too sure. is a 7-8 second 0-60 dreaming (in a stock weight type 3) and if not can it be accomplished with one of the two above engines?
thanks in advance

ps. just curious what is your car is running 0-60. specs. thanks again.

Hi,
I think under 8 sec in a late type 3 with a 2 liter type 4 is possible , but not with a moderate engine. I've had a 2 liter 914 engine with dual carbs/ cam in my former '72 square, but could not do that sort of numbers, more like 10-11sec. It had about 110 hp.
In my (heavy) 1303 I had about 140hp from a 1995cc type 4 (94,5x71) with almost everything done : 44x38 valves, long duration cam, BAS headers etc and was able to do 0-62 (100km/h) under 8 seconds. Your '73 must be even heavier and cannot use high free breathing manifolds/aircleaners with velocity stacks. With modified injection and all: yes, maybe... Type 1: eh, what was that again?

well, my budget only allows for a slightly modded type 4(cam, carbs, mild porting, compression, and rebuild) while i can afford more with a type 1 based motor, a 1915, 69mm x 94mm. with the 1915, what would you guesstimate for a 0-60, faster or slower than the 10-11 sec 0-60 that wally quoted me? ps thanks alot for the post wally, i have been searching for some specs on a type 3 with the type 4 conversion just like yours, thanks. wonder what my 0-60 is with my stock 1600 dp is? ill check tomorrow thanks in advance

Cool

0-60 with the stock 1600DP? you probably dont want to know. at least with my 1600DP in a 73 std beetle things start to slow down a lot around 50mph. driving around town, no problem, more than enough to keep up with traffic, get it out on the highway and it takes its time getting up to 60-65 (but will get there), could probably hit 75 but needs a tune up, carb adjustment, and valve adjustment.

though im planning on turning my currently stock 73 into a GL car it will probably remain type1 powered as this is my first foray into VW high performance

Lets see - I remember a couple of articles that quoted 0-60mph/0-100kph times for the 72 VW 1303S (thats a superbeetle with stock 1600DP). They were in the 17-18 second range. The 1303 tips the scales at around 2000lbs. That should give you a good idea what your T3 will do.
