Aircooled Sound?

I'm curious. The aircooled sound is..well loud and can be annoying. Is that all exaust I hear on these beetles or is it engine blowin air or something? What kind of exhausts can make these cars quieter and sound way better?

The aircooled engine has no water jackets over the engine to help kill noise. The exhaust is normaly very short. Thre are some exhaust systems that are less ear shatering that others. I run an 1 3/4 merged S&S Type 1 exhaust with a MagnaFlow Fat boy, it's not too bad.

My 2.5" phatboy (magnaflow) is on the loud side, plus you have the webers sucking in air as well. I would imagine that it's comprable to GHL's 3" turbo-back exhaust for 1.8t's. A set of webers can also be a little loud. In a standard setup, you can hear the fan whistling a bit. Straight cut cam gears will produce a whining, supercharger-esque sound.

There are some exhausts that are set up with two straight-thru mufflers in line with eachother. I'm not sure how much quieter it makes the engine.

Personally, I love the sound of the AC engine. Webers sucking in air, the mechanical sound of the engine itself and the lumpy boxer exhaust note is part of the mystique and personality of these cars.

I love the sound of my Phat Boy and the Dell 45's singing their tune.

The stock exhaust pipes on Beetles are pea-shooters. They are of very small diameter and have a tendency to make whistling or tweeting sounds as they age. Personally, I think it's one of the charms of a stock Bug, but it's nothing like a big tuned exhaust.

if you go TIV, the BAS system uses double mufflers in series that makes it pretty darn quiet (911ish) until you go WOT. the header alone is thunderous though. you will still hear the carbs, fan, and valvetrain, but that is mostly why we love these cars. there is nothing else that sounds like a aircooled.

Yep only a true VW person has the VW sixth sense. You can hear it before you see it or know one is coming with your back turned.

I have that.... I can find a VW in a field behind a barn.

If I could only tune that sense to find buried treasure. :agree:

yeah they have a unique sound. i was driving and i heard a wrx with a different exhaust, and it sounded like a rumble rumble. i thought it was awesome. do flat 4's make a different sound? i thought they were just like a straight 4. maybe different firing order creates that sound?

I have a t4 engine with weber 44 IDF's, BAS header and single dynomax 2 1/2" "turbo" muffler, 911 cooled ... NOTHING puts a smile on my face more than driving my car and listening to the unique sound of the engine
