Inexpensive rear disc conversion?

Lanner,
What is a cheap rear disc conversion for a swing axle?
Gotta be able to clear 15s and be re-drilled for 5x4.75 bolt pattern. Also gotta have a decent e-brake setup.

Also, whats the fee to re-drill? It's prolly cheaper to have you buy a fresh set of rotors and modify than pay to ship a set all the way to you? Opinions?

Jeff,

The 944NA can be modified for other bolt patterns. See what you can get the 944 setup for, and I can redrill the hubs..$C80pr with studs installed.

Same price to modify an off the shelf disk setup. Something like this would probably be cheapest because you can get it already machined for chevy bolt pattern.

Thanks! I'm just trying to get a decent driver together, my 61 ragtop. Nothing fancy, no big engine, no big brakes, just a mostly stocker with a few small upgrades. It has a balljoint pan with discs up front already but the rear stuff is completely missing. If I've gotta buy something anyway, might as well put discs on. I'll keep you posted.

Jeff,

I've had the empi rear disk kit on my super. I personally didn't like it too much, the pedal was heavy and the pads wore down too quick. I actually sold it and put drums back on. Much better.

Something to consider, because I'm sure you could get a late model (68+) drum setup for cheap. Cut the nose on the drum, machine to chevy and roll....

Yeah, I even considered trying to hunt down some T3 stuff for the bigger drums/shoes. I'll look around but VWs are really scare around here .

Early swing has short axle/spline, later swing has long axles/splines. The "snout" on the drums is longer on lates so you would have to mill some off (I think its about 15mm) to use it on an early car. Mine actually has a later pan under it, so I'm good to use the later stuff. (later is mid 68-on)

Lanner, if I'm completely wrong, don't hesitate to bust me out. I tried to read up on this stuff and could have it all bass-ackwards.

Jeff is right, you need to chop 16mm off the nose of the drum to fit the late model IRS (or long swingaxle) on the early shortaxles. This allows the axle nut to engage correctly. Same story when putting the 944 hubs on shortaxle.

Shipping shouldn't be that bad using Canada Post. A couple years back i shipped a T3 setup to Mass, it wasn't that bad. Ask Martin to eat some of the shipping cost.

Looks like around $60 to ship. Still, $350 is a bunch to go back to drums. Seems like the CB roto hub setup I had on the bus was only around $250 and avail w/blanks. I'm not in a rush, guess I'll keep my eyes peeled for a deal.
