Putting 270 ft lbs in the back, stick with stock tranny?

Ok, I know the obvious answer is no, and it would be smart to do that right from the start, but as of right now the engine, brakes, and everything to get the car rolling, and out of the shop on its own is more important than my 1/4 mile times right now. So, my question is, How long will that trans last in that car, as long as I pussy-foot it?

After this one goes, i'm going to start looking for maybe a 5-speed transmission, i've read on here that a porsche 901 trans will work, and I think it can handle the power. The engine is supercharged and it has a 12 psi pully on right now, but I have the option of putting on the 22 psi pully and crank the engine to over 350 ft lb. The car will also be driven on nice days, dragged when I want to take it to the track, and still drive to distant events, so a 5th is a must unless I want to stay at 5 grand the whole way!!

What kind of trans would you recommend that I look into to satisfy my needs?

a 901 tranny is only good to about 200hp in stock form and the first gear is very week. you will probably have to start in second gear with a 901.

a stock t1 tranny is only good to about 100hp.
even going lightly you are going to be putting alot stress on it.
I dont think anyone can tell you how long it will last.
I guess it would depend on if it has just been rebuilt or is old and tired.
It its brand new it will probably last a while as long as you never dropped the clutch. If its old and tired it could go at any time.

you might be able to get a 901 built up properly to handle your horsepower, but it will definitely cost you more then using a stock 901.

Or you can build up a T1 case using all aftermarket gears and aftermarket ring and pinion too. You could also add a Berg 5 kit all depends on what kind of money you want to spend.

The 1st gear in the 901 is in the nose cone so it is only realy supported one one end. 2nd - 5th is as strong as the 915. As long as you don't do drag launches a 901 is good to 200 hp in stock form and 300+ hp in a performance built form. You get to the point in a performance build when the case is the limiting factor. The early all aluminum cases/intermediate plate are said to be stronger.

With the addition of an aluminum intermediate plate, as available thru the aftermarket, a 901 will be about as strong as you'll need, but the plate alone is around $500, and a competent rebuild would be 4 or 5 times that.

I happen to have an early Aluminum case, intermediate plate, nose cone and shift rods from a 67 911. A 914 guts will drop in. It is missing the side plate but I found one for my other aluminum 901 on Ebay for under $20. I could hook someone up if they wanted to go that way.

That's the setup I got, make sure to get the early 911 gasket set not the 914 cause they are a bit different.

Thanks, once I get all the parts I'll order a gasket set with whatever else I need to complete the install.

My sugestion would be to go with a 091 or 002 bus tranny.
They are only 4 speed, but with that kind of torque you don't need 5 gears anyways.

With either of these transmissions you can up it to 22psi and abuse it as much as you want to.

Hmm, i;d like to get more info on this, how do you stuff a bus tranny into a bug? I'd think that its a bit bigger than the stock beetle's trans...
What years and models should I look for, or can I get the trans straight from a shop that rebuild them?
