Engine oil

What type of enginge oil do you use? Mineral or syntetic. What viscosity works best in your area (usual air temperature when you are driving the car).
What is your experience from using different oil types?

I'm trying to figure out what kind of oil is the best for my engine.
I have a 1835 with dual 44 webers and CB performance street eliminator heads.
It would be nice if you could share your experience.

I use SHELL Rotella-T 15-40, it has plenty of zink in it to satisfy your cam/flat tapets. Aircooled engines like there vitamins.

I read the data sheet for it and it seems to be an for use in heavy duty diesel engines and also gasoline engines.
How long have you used it? What temperature do you usually use your car?

be aware the new shell rotella has almost no zinc in it. It had to be reformulated for the 07 diesel engines. Go to aircooled technology forums and go to the oil section to read more

Hi everyone, new to posting here, but have looked in once in a while.

The 911 guys have been using Thr Brad Penn Racing Oils for a time with good results, and I've started using it just recently.

There is a 30 wt engine breakin in oil with a little higher Zinc content than the other Penn oils. There is a 20w - 50w, A 50w A 70w for Nitro Methane motors, and couple others, they also have gear oils.

Just a thought, how about adding STP oil treatment to the engine oil? It contains a lot of zinc!

I am using Brad Penn, and it is great oil for the air cooled engines. You can also look over at Aircooledtechnologies. Jake requires Brad Penn in all his kit and build engines now. Several engine builders and many Porsche builders are running Brad Penn now. I just tore down a type 4 engine with 5K miles on it that had run only Brad Penn break in oil and 20/50, engine looks just like it did when I put it together. The cam and cylinders looked brand new. I am a believer in it.

There is a thread running on this subject on Pelican Parts 911 technical forum right now. Wade through all the pages and decide for yourself, but Brad Penn (sounds like an actor) seems the oil of choice.

Great stuff if you can get it however for those of us not in the USA, we need to look at other choices.
ACVW engines have a lot in common with bike engines. I use Mobil 1 Delvac in everything I own. Yes this is diesel oil but read this and decide for yourself:

While you are thinking about oil, think about the filter. If you do not have a filter, install one. I use only Purolator Pure 1 filters for the following reasons:

You mentioned that it is important with clean oil, I agree.
Here is an alternativ for oilfilter. It is from the hydraulic world, its a return filter for lid mounting on hydraulic tank. But it works very well with car engines.
It has a 10 mikron nominal filtration which is far better than a standard car oil filter. The larger size and filter area compensate the pressure drop increased by the better filtration.
As you see it is quite easy to mount it under the rear fender (I will probably mount some kind of protection plate in front of it).
I bought it from my local Parker store and also the steel braided teflon hoses.

We are a couple of guys who runs the filters both on street and race with good result.
