944 cv joints to T1 transaxle

Is the '87 944NA cv joint same as VW Type 2 or Type 4 cv? Do I need custom-made drive flanges for T1 box with T2 or T4 cv bolt pattern? If so, who (which company) carries such item?

Thanks
Tim

All the 944 & Bus CVs are the same (as far as I know). There are companies that make that flange, like FAT Performance in Orange, California or you can use a Type 181 (Thing/Trekker/Kubelwagen) flange as it's a Type I case and Type II flange.

As usual, I'm 99.9% sure this is correct but get second opinion.

axles

Do I need to run stronger axles with stock to mild type IV or can I run stock type I axles? I plan to run taller gears (?), a super diff w/ LS. Are there other things I should upgrade on the transaxle/axles? I will have 16" wheels with a 24" tall tire. What about ring and pinion? I would like to do some road (club) racing, street/highway driving with 1/4 miles low priority. Sorry a lot of questions, but I am really unsure of all of that stuff.
Thank you

Summary?

The weakest link is the T1 PCD CV bolts at the output flange. The bigger CV PCD of the Porsche and T2 reduces the shear stress on the CV bolt when loaded. The same, M8 bolts are used throught the automotive industry.

Racing axles have a lower torsional rigidity which means they can store potential energy and wind up like a spring, which reduces shock loading in some cases.

The T1 and 944 axles are indeed the same length. The T2 axle is longer? The 951 axle is longer.

The T1 and T2 axles are the same diameter. The diameter of the 944 is bigger.

The T2 and the 944 CV has the same PCD. The T1 is smaller.

The T2 CV has the same spline as the T1, only ~1-2mm longer (axle or CV centre needs trimming to fit circlip)

This will then couple a T1 axle to either a T2 or 944 hub flange. The same goes to the output flange of a Porsche trans, a T2 trans or to a T1 with T181 output flanges or a T1 with a Quaife LSD.

If and it's a big if, if the T2 axle was the same length, as a 951, I'd have my polished 951 arms on, even with only the T1 diameter axles, 'til I can get the Quaife and use the 951 axles.

'hope that helps,

Matt
