dropped spindles not dropping?
Hows it going, I got CB dropped spindles, but the weird thing is they really didn't drop the front. I mean currently the front is still missing a bit of wieght and I got new shocks.
I got some cheap KYB GR2's; and am missing the front fenders, the fuel tank, seats and some other small tid bits. So I wondering with the un-worn condition of the new shocks and the lack of weight could be the reason why the front isn't as dropped at it should be? Right now the front sits at above stock hieght which is reasonable. And looking at my fathers bug who also only has dropped spindles, his is about 4-6 inches lower than mine, which seems like a lot of distance for not a lot of wieght. True when i fill the the tank it should drop, but is this only a weight issues, or do new shocks have to "break in" also? Guess best bet would be to continue to work on it and hopfully when it is put back together it will drop correctly. Thanks Rip

is it possible they sent you their stock height spindles instead of
their dropped spindles? Because even without weight on the front end it should have lowered the car 2.5" regardless (if there was no weight on the front end before you lowered it as well)

yeah got the dropped ones, the axle is above the the top ball joint, not between the ball joint mounts.
I went and rebuilt the front end, so torn down then re-greased everything. Urethane bushings are in. And before I put the beam in I made sure it was together right. Made sure there wasn't binding and everything moved smoothy.

I don't know very much about ball joint bug but on my bus (king pin) if you over tighten the pinch bolts that hold the spindle assembly to the arms, it won't let them move and will freeze up the front end.

I can't remember, but are the GR2s gas shocks? Sometimes until they are settled they add a lot of springy. Does supension travel smoothly though high? Sometimes, if the balljoints have been replaced, they can be pressed in on the wrong rotation. They will bind and won't allow for much movement at all. Just trying to help, so many options.

it moves, and yeah they're gas. I hear that they take a bit to work in. Guess may be a few bags of concete will help brake them in.
don't think that the ball joints are the problem they were pretty smooth, and put in right, slots and all. all well guess find out monday, hopfully be on the road by then. rip

how dropped are the dropped spindles?
they always say that gas shocks are going to raise your car. i'd imagine you probably had pretty worn springs in the first place and there's not much weight on there in either, did you get new tires too with deep tread? it could be a combination of things |

Amount of weight on the front axle makes a big difference to ride height even with stiff gas shocks on (it's because the front torsion bars are actually very soft)
Just a full tank of fuel can lower the front of a beetle by as much as an inch. Even on a beetle with stiff gas shockers this is true. |

When you break really Hard o accelerate hard with more than 120 hp , the nose goes down with the drop spindles, for race in tarmac some people in Perú use lowered stock suspension Hidraulic KYB or GR2 in front and white Kyb gas a just rear .... if you have more $$ , buy Bilsten (rear)
