944t brakes on king and link bug w/cb brakes now

Okay........I'm tired of fooling around.....It's winter.......I've got time on my hands........

My bug currently has CB Perf. disks all the way 'round...it's a 65...king&link front end.

How am I gonna get 944t (or some such other) brakes on my bug ?

Lee from L.A. Perf. was working on it...Franklin Motors say they're working on it.......

I don't wanna wait...

Any suggestions ?

Thanks, Dan

OK,

I've never worked with K&L spindles before but this process is going to have 2 steps to adapt the 944 brakes. Rear is pretty much a bolt-on. For the front:

1. Adapt 944 hubs to the spindle
2. Adapt the caliper to the spindle.

1 is not difficult ... get a hub and machine some sleevess to fit over the spindle so you can use stock 944 bearings and stock grease seal.

2 is a little more involved ... depending on where the hub sits on the spindle, you'll have to machine an adapter ....

The sleeves will cost little if you have access to a lathe, and use plastic blocking from a plastics supplier (cheap, same stuff kitchen cutting boards are made of) to mock up your adapter. This stuff cuts really easy with a hacksaw and you can shape it with a dremel to get the fit.

Then get it machined out of steel/aluminum.

Hope this is enough to get you started.

Interesting.
Even on a swingaxle rear ? Any idea what parts I'd need for the rears ?
The calipers themselves...then......?

Thanks!!

Whoops. Sorry, I forgot that the '65 had a swing rear end. I'm not sure if the rear would bolt on but I thought I read somewhere that it did.

Part #'s and diagram are as follows:

I'm not sure where I got this picture but if anyone knows, let me know and I will give credit where due.

You could check to see if the system will fit by getting the Porsche bearing cover (item between the hub and caliper mount). This item might bolt on to the swing axle and would be the basis of the conversion. It is also identical to the item from a IRS bug.

If you can get me the dimensions of your bearing cover ('65 swing), I have a spare one here ('74 IRS) I could measure for you.

Does anyone else have any input ?

I think that it has been stated that rear drums from irs and swingaxle beetles are interchangable so the rear 944 hubs should swap over as well, there is only a slight problem with the spline length. The swingaxle splines are a little too short so you need to machine like 15mm off of the end of the hub to get the nut to thread on.

Good knews

Good knews for you,
I just checked on Porsche PET about the bearings on the 356C and the early 944. They are the same!
If you can find a pair of 356C disk front spindles, they will bolt onto your front suspension in place of the drum spindles. The Porsche 944 hub and disk assembly will then bolt onto that. The only thing you have to sort out from there is mounting the caliper. I think the bolt spacing is different for the 356C and early 911 calipers to the 944 calipers but I don't have the info to hand.
It's a big step closer.

Oh... 944 brakes will bolt onto swing axle rear suspension. As stated above, if it's a narrow track, you will need to machine off 12-15mm from the hub where the nuts sits as the splines are shorter. Nothing major for a machine shop to take on.

Yep - got the conversion done last winter.

Front brakes

Rear Brakes

All this on a stock width beam - under stock fenders.

On Porsche 17" Turbo Twists.
