do you think this would impeed the air flow to the engine? and over heat because of a low pressure area beneath the wing?

i guess you could drill 1" holes in it or install a grill to let the air pass.

Interestingly, I've wondered whether spoilers like this up to the so-called Whale tail actually produces downforce for stablility. As far as liking it is concerned, I would say yes if it actually functions.

As far as air flow and engine cooling concerns go, I am not the person to ask. I would toss this much out there, though ... This is offered by a shop which deals with performance VWs. Additionally, one of the photos has one on an older Beetle with a ventless lid.

(Why are Japanese Supers in the for sale section right hand drive?)

I have a New Beetle rear wing I got from the Real Source on my car. No apparent cooling problems. Mounted (with NO modifications to wing or car) in the same place as the Jsports one, but does not block off the vents like the Jsports one seems to do. Here's a couple of pics to show you what I mean.




I like the way it looks. Not too flashy, and definitly different. As far as function goes, I imagine that if I could get my bug up to high enough speeds, it would profide either some downforce or break up the airflow over the car so it wouldn't take off.

BUGMAN-Have you raiding a New Beetle parts bin-is that a New Beetle 3rd brake light,side marker lamps and radio aerial that I see on your car?I have fitted a VW rear spoiler to my New Beetle and have thought about adapting the original brake light into my early beetle-looked like one for the too hard basket for me

Indeed I di borrow from our thirsty cousin (read: water-cooled). New Beetle side markers, antenna with Honda S2000 mast or Beetle whip mast, and a 3rd brake light. The brake light was interesting to do. I made a template and did some measuring, and cut it out very carefully with a grinder/cutting disk combo. The problem is that the light and the lid have a slightly different curve to them, so I built up the curve with a little bondo and I put a slight bend in the decklid to make it all work. I still need to do some cleaner wiring under the lid, but it works great, looks great, and is definitley a big improvement in saftey, especially when half the vehicles on the road are SUV's and my car being low.

Since you're saying you have an early beetle, so I assume we're dealing with the long decklids. I personally wouldn't do it to one of those lids. I don't think the lines would agree. However, you can always try. Get a spare lid at a show for cheap and experiment.

In any case, I do recommend the addition of some sort of 3rd brake light for safety.

Yes I have a '56 but have changed the rear panel to use a '73 engine cover-have a 2.7lt Type 4 with Porsche cooling,need the extra cooling vents and room for exhaust,Where you have fitted the brake light is where the double skin is for the hinge and spring support,thats why I gave up trying it there. I also made up a template,and with the shape of the light,its a perfect fit just above the oval back window,but I don't want one bad enough to cut into the body.Would also fit into the top of the centre cooling holes in the cover,but a lot of work,will have another look at what you have done-Cheers

Obviously, so. I certainly didn't realize (or should I say "realise"?) Japan was one. Even so, I see LHD VWs for sale every once in a while in VolksWorld so I was hoping for the same from Japan.

(I've never driven a RHD car before but I have driven a LHD car on the left -- and quite properly I might add before anyone conjures up the notion I had a few too many stouts. It gave me the creeps. I can't imagine having a RHD car here in the states.)

Its not so much of a problem in slow vehicles, its when you want to overtake something that the trouble starts..
