17s on a 1303

Be kind its my first thread!
I've just bought a disc conversion for my 73 1303 and also re-drilled discs and drums for 4x100 fitment. Am i right in thinking to fit 17s I will need slimline struts like kerscher or topline maxx ones? Also what offset wheels will i need to keep original wings. i've been offered 17s with et38 4x100 but think i may need larger offset? One last thing can i run 205/40s all round

thanks

Yes.

TopLine recommends 50mm to 55mm if you want 17-inch wheels. I am sure this assumes a 7-inch width.

Hey, if you already knew the answer ...

Actually, some water-cooled VW wheels are six inches wide so maybe you can get away with a 38mm offset. (I don't know of any 17-inch diameter wheels which are only six inches wide, though.)

TopLine's test car has 205/40-17s on the front, so the answer should be yes with the right wheels.

One thing you need to do is see if you have early or late struts on your '73. This was changed mid-year by Volkswagen. TopLine's test car is a 1302. If you have the early style struts, you're fine. If you have the later style struts, you still may be fine or you may need some additional tweaking.

It appears your wheels and their offset are it as far as your issues are concerned.

If you have a 75-79 super you must use at least a 52mm on a 7.5" rim. I purchased 17x7 40mm wheels for my 78 super and did not fit. Changed whole suspension to an 72 sb. Fit perfect no spacer.

thats 73.5 - 79 Supers with the later 2bolt strut.
You must use at least a 50mm offset on a 7" wheel with the later Supers.

struts are the 3 bolt type!
