Bringing the Beetles electronics into this century

I'm installing a couple gauges in my 1970 Beetle, and while I was messing around with the fusebox, I decided that a late-model type fuse box (with the blade-type fuses) would be much nicer.

Has anybody done this before ?
I did a bit of 'research' at the local Canadian Tire , and it seems that the modern fuses do not come in 8 and 16 Amps.

Could I replace them with a lower amperage ? Or would they blow out all the time ?
Don't want to go with a much higher amperage, because I am not a fan of burning Beetles

Any hints, tips or wisecracks ?

Rob.
