Aircooled 6-cylinder 2,7 ltr, not porsche...

Its the chevrolet Corvair engine!
Actually ahead of its time, its a lot like a type 4 engine, but has two cylinders more and sports 2,7 ltr in most versions.
Introduced in 1960 (!), it has an aluminium case like the type 4 and about 87,3mm bore x 74,4 mm stroke. The 'inch' sizes are a bit annoying tho

Also unfortunately it runs the other way around, but there were 'reversion' kits made with special camshafts for use in mostly (dune) buggies.
That also gave the idea to use VW cylinder and pistons which gave very huge size motors:

About 1.2 million Corvairs were made and it has a large following and many clubs and specialised companys exist. Because of the number of cars made, engines and parts are plentifull and cheap!

So: dare to be different and go corvair 6 cylinder!
I already bought me an engine as it does fit very nicely in the engine bay of cars that ran type 4 engine from the factory, like a certain....VW 412S

Mine is one from an originally dutch registered car, but you're right, there are probably very few separate engines available in Europe.
But prices are so low for these engines ($200-$300 range in the US) compared to porsche 6-bangers, that even including shipping, it would still be relatively low budget.

But availability aside, I mean: a 6-cylinder type 4 Just how cool is that!
The funny thing is: 'they' struggle with the same (tuning) issues as us VW mentals do

Can you post us some links of these forum please Wally? Do you know if it clears a Beetle's engine bay? or there is lots of cutting in the floor and firewall? Thanks

In a beetle, it would be critical towards the rear apron, but not nearly as bad as a 911 engine; Width however wouldn't be a problem at all.

But I was thinking more about an application in a type 3 or a 411/412, where the extra length of the engine itself would be about the same as a stock type 3 of 4 engine.

Hi Wally,

That sounds like a great plan for a 412!!

If the Corvair motor turns the wrong way, can you not fit a 914 tranny in the wrong way, like 2 wrongs make a right?

Well, that sorta was my intial thought as well to be honest.
No reason to try to make both of them turn the other way around with those parts

corvair in an 69 IRS...

Guys,
I have a corvair powered 69' Baja Bug...
I just wanted to share with you all and see if any one has any questions. The place to talk to would be Clarks Corvair http://www.corvair.com . Also review here: http://www.corvair.com/user-cgi/pages.cgi?category=vw... (realizing this has been sortof posted above)

I also have a parts list that can be posted to those that are interested in what it will take to complete the conversion. This motor is beefy, piles of torque and will, with stock vw tranny, lift the front wheels off the ground under a full-hook-up launch.

Questions:
1. Is it an easy swap?
- mostly save the need for reverse rotation
2. what about adapter plates?
- Clarks has all you need and are great to work with.
3. Spendy?
- no, the challenge is finding people to turn wrenches on it.
4. Weight?
- about 250lbs more then a stock motor. which is enough to notice...
5. Cooling?
- I cannot overstate the importance of cooling this motor... take the time.

I hope to have located my conversion flywheel and adapter through ebay.

I think/hope you are somewhat off on the weight, but we'll see when I get to it to weight the whole thing.
