EJ20T ground clearance and gearbox relocation Q's

Can anyone who has done this conversion in a beetle please give me a measurement from bottom of the ends of the frame forks (where the rear gearbox mount bolts on to the frame forks) to the lowest point on the engine.

I am trying to get an idea of how much ground clearance I will have, realizing everyone has their rear ends lowered different amounts.

I have also read that to get the cam covers inside the rear body sheetmetal, the stock gearbox will have to be moved ahead about 2". My problem here is that my 901 gearbox has already been moved ahead as far as it can be without clearancing the torsion tube.

I calculated it has been moved about 2" and the rear of the bellhousing on the 901 is in roughly the same position as the rear of the bellhousing on my stock 4 speed before I removed it.

Thanks for any information anyone can provide.

I got the tape measure out previously for a friend but these should also help you:
bottom of sump to crank centre: 275mm

bottom of sump to top of throttle body: 620mm

end of crank pulley to other face of engine (length): 410mm

width between heads: 760mm

overall width of cam pulley covers: 810mm

The 2" that people move the trans is because that is the number that comes when you reverse the rear cradle, I'm sure you could get away with less than that as it is very close to fitting without any movement.

For ground clearance it is easy to get about 30mm more by shortening the sump to the exhaust level, any more than that and you have to relocate the oil filter and modify/replace the exhaust.

Hope this helps!

From the T4 crank pulley center to the ground, I have about 350mm ... the subie pulley center to the sump is 275mm so that would give me 75mm (3") of ground clearance with an un-compressed suspension

Basis for this is that the crank pulley should be the line that mates up to the gearbox through the flywheel.

This does not seem like alot of clearance. I really don't want to raise the rear of the car up.

If I shorten the sump to get it to exhaust level I can gain an additional 30mm - say 4" of ground clearance total. This still does not seem like alot.

you should gain more like 1.5 inches by shortening the pan. thats about 4.5 inches. I had about 2.5 clearance to the headers, drove it like that for awhile, but eventually had to raise it up a lil. now i have about 4-4.5. I feel its plenty of room if you have decent roads. I also have 29mm torsion bars.

4-4.5" should be plenty, remember that this is fairly close to the axle line of the car (once shifted forwards) so ground clearance becomes less of an issue here...

subynotch after shortening the pan, are you running the factory subaru 4.8 qts or whatever it is, or are you running less?

~4.5quarts. Outbackmotors.com has a good explaination on why u can run the same capacity on the shorter pan.
